Weekend on the Rock, November 1-3, 2013: Celluloid and Art

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of November 1-3, 2013. It’s a big weekend, so hold on!

1. “Watercourse,” Paintings by Marcia Shaver
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Is there no end to the talent on Bainbridge Island? Do you know how hard it is, week after week, to find out new ways to say something is really good? I quit.

2. 15th Annual Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival
When: Friday-Sunday, starting at 6 on Friday
Where: Bainbridge Cinemas, Lynwood Theatre, The Marketplace at Pleasant Beach
Why: Free movies all weekend. Read more here.

3. Grain’s Destination Pop-Up Party
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Charrette, 130 Winslow Way East
Why: This pop-up shop features the work of Chelsea and James Minola of Bainbridge Island-based design studio Grain. What is Grain? Who are the Minolas? Here’s your chance to find out. I hope they have their strung chandelier on hand (Warning: It’s not cheap).

4. Merrilee Moore Opening Reception at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: BAC, 151 Winslow Way
Why: Moore’s sculptured glass is hot. While you’re at BAC, also check out Women in the Abstract, featuring a local army of artists.

5. Carrie Goller Jewelry Event
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: BIMA Museum Store, 550 Winslow Way East
Why: I happen to own, ahem, a Carrie Goller. You might too. Meet the artist and then on Saturday enjoy her Trunk Show and Jewelry Assembly Event, starting at 10 a.m.

6. First Fridays Art Walk
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: It’s like a TV dinner: You get to eat and watch stuff, in this case great art.

7. YO Spirit of Asia, Music of Japan & India
When: Friday, 7:30-10 p.m.
Where: Grace Church, 8595 NE Day Road
Why: YO means “The World” I am told, but I am not told what language it means it in. I’m going to guess Japanese. Ty Burhoe, Akihisa Kominato, and Yutaka Oyama rock it.

8. Healthy Youth Summit
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: BHS Commons
Why: This first of three summits brought to you by Bainbridge Youth Services, Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, Raising Resilience, and the Bainbridge Island School District tackles the question “What do we know about how B.I. youth are developing into healthy young adults?” For more info. go to http://bihealthyyouth.org/.

9. Body-Singing Workshop
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: Grace Church, 8595 Day Road East
Why: Opera singer Victoria Robertson will teach you how to sing or sing better. Note: There is no guarantee that after the workshop you will sound at all like she does.

10. Opening Day at The Dayaalu Center with Ty Burhoe
When: Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Where: The Dayaalu Center, 159 Wyatt Way
Why: What’s the Dayaalu Center, you ask? That’s what this event is about: Introducing the community to the new incarnation of The Island Yoga Space. Ty Burhoe will wake up after his concert (see above) and join Jeny Vidal and Jon Crane for a special two hour Sound Flow Yoga class.

Early registration is recommended! $20.

11. Carole Barrer Painting Demonstration: Surface Exploration
When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
Where: BAC, 151 Winslow Way
Why: Barrer shows you how to texturize.

12. Benefit Concert for Bainbridge Skate Bowl
When: Saturday, 2-5 p.m.
Where: Strawberry Hill Park, 7666 NE High School Rd
Why: The bowl needs an upgrade I am told. This event will raise funds to help with that and for an expansion. Five youth bands—Apparitions, Run Melos, Clank, Doormats, and Dumpster Baby—will be playing at the bowl. Wonder what those acoustics will be like? If it rains, the whole thing, minus the bowl, will be held at Island Center Hall. Sponsored by the B.I. Metro Park District and Teen Center. Suggested donation is $5.


13. Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration
When: Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: This falls into the “If you have to ask” category. Crafts, food (not sure what that would be for Whovians), science. Time travel not included.

14. Oh, My Paws and Whiskers: Car and Dog Portraits with Susan Wiersma
When: Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: BAC, 151 Winslow Way
Why: Bring photos of your animal companions and then turn those into art using colored pencils.

Tuition: $120 (members $110, students $100). Register at BAC or call 842-3132. For ages 16 and up. A separate class will be offered for kids.

15. BCNS 50th Anniversary Concert
When: Sunday, 10:30 a.m.
Where: Treehouse Cafe, 4569 Lynwood Center Road NE
Why: Johnny Bregar leads this family bluegrass concert.

Doors open at 10:15 and tickets are $7 in advance at T&C or $10 at the door. T-shirts, tote bags, and raffle tickets are also being sold. For more info go to www.bcnspreschool.org.

16. Archery
When: Sunday, 12-2 p.m.
Where: 8203 Sportsman Club Rd NE.
Why: Every Sunday, channel your own Katniss. Family friendly, safe range overseen by experienced Range Safety Officers.

17. Story Time: Turkey Tot with George Shannon and Jennifer K. Mann 
When: Sunday, 3-4 p.m.
Where: Eagle Harbor Books, 157 Winslow Way E
Why: Shannon and Mann collaborated on this story about a turkey who finds a way to gather out-of-reach blackberries. I have been that turkey.

18. First Sundays Concerts
When: Sundays, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center, 370 Brien Drive
Why: Jazz artists Randy Porter on piano, John Wiitala on bass, and Alan Jones on drums. Good looks and talent.
