At the 41st Annual Remy Wilcox High School Speech Tournament, November 8 to 10, at Whitman College in Walla Walla, first-year team member Cedar Williams won the Junior Lincoln Douglas event and five members of the BHS Speech and Debate Team qualified for the final bracket. They competed against more than 300 students from Washington, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and British Columbia.
For the Junior LD event, Williams defeated 34 competitors. Teammate Nathaniel Mahlum also qualified for the Junior final 16.
In the Open LD division, Sarah McDonagh of Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho, was the big winner among the 67 entries, finishing with a final score of 9-0 and earning unanimous decisions by the judges in the final three rounds. Spartan Jacob Reiter made it to the elite 8 with a 5-1 preliminary round. He eventually lost to McDonagh. Spartan James Maltman qualified for the final 16 but also was defeated by McDonagh.
In the Novice LD division, BHS’s Brian Messing qualified for the final bracket. He also finished second out of 36 in the Junior Impromptu Individual Speech event. Teammate Clio Batali took fourth.
These good BHS results at the Walla Walla tournament were preceded by last week’s Snohomish Panther Invite where Messing finished first in Junior Impromptu and third in Junior Extemporaneous categories. Maltman took second in the Open LD event with a 5-1 record. Batali, also with a 5-1 record, finished third.
