The Bainbridge High School boys basketball team has experienced a mixed start to the new year. On January 3, they lost a hard one, 65-72, at home against Rainier Beach. Although Joey Blacker, back in fine form after snapping his femur in mid-June, scored 25 points and teammates Ben Beatie and Blake Swanson each contributed 10, Rainier Beach led in three quarters, 17-14, 20-18, and 21-19, and tied BHS at 14 points in the second. Rainier Beach’s David Crisp pounded in 37 points on his own.

Then, the Spartans again took it on the chin January 7, with a loss to Eastside Catholic, 54-74, on the Crusaders’ court. Again Joey Blacker gave it his all, scoring 22 points. Teammates Oskar Dieterich and Swanson each tossed in 9, Lyle Terry contributed 8, and Beatie had 6. But it wasn’t enough against the fearsome fivesome of Crusaders Matisse Thybulle, Alex Vilarino, Mandrell Worthy, Ian Christie, and Zach Wallin and their combined 68 points.

But  three days later, the Spartans pulled off a lowish-scoring win, 58-42, against Ingraham at home. Although Coach Scott Orness described the first half as “slow and sloppy,” Bainbridge led all four quarters, hit 17 of 35 two-point shots and 7 of 17 three pointers, and dominated the boards with 37 rebounds to Ingraham’s 20. The Spartans held Ingraham to 28 percent of shots from the field. Again, Blacker played a great game, pulling down 8 boards and scoring 18 points. Teammates Dieterich, Swanson, and Terry put in 13,10, and 9 points, respectively.

Orness credited Ingraham with an effective 1-2-2 three-quarter court trap and a zone in the half court that took the Spartans out of their offensive rhythm.

The Spartans next face off against Bishop Blanchet at home, tomorrow, January 14, at 7 p.m.
