12:44 p.m.
Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for this weekend, November 9-12, 2012:
1. Sour Grapes: A Murder Mystery
When: Friday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: If you know Otto Graff, better start saying your goodbyes. . . . This “after-hours gala” at the libe promises to be killer! Come meet Graff, who, as you must certainly know, is a “prominent local author.” It is recommended that you get him to sign your copy of his book early in the evening.
2. Neighborhood Toy Store Day
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: The Curious Child, 130 Winslow Way E.
Why: Did you know it’s Annual Neighborhood Toy Store Day? Did you even know there is one? No matter, your kid can jump in on the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) action this Saturday with crafts, games, raffles, and prizes. All ages welcome.
3. Friends of the Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: Inexpensive holiday shopping. Enough said.
4. Stephens House Celebrates 10th Anniversary
When: Saturday, 4-7 p.m.
Where: Boys and Girls Club at The Aquatic Center
Why: There’s food and beverages, a DJ (Bob Winters), and a cake. Celebrate ten years of this day program for young adults with developmental disabilities.
5. Benefit for the East Coast: Deli Night at CKS
When: Saturday, 6-10 p.m.
Where: Congregation Kol Shalom, 9010 Miller Road
Why: This benefit for the East Coast post-Hurricane Sandy is a New York deli dinner and karaoke.
$30/person, adults only please. RSVP with choice of meat (pastrami, brisket, corned beef, roast turkey, tuna salad) to admin@kolshalom.net.
6. Vino & Vinyasa
When: Saturday, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: The Island Yoga Space, 9463 NE Business Park Lane
Why: I’m not exactly sure what a gently lit Vinyasa flow class is, but it sounds really nice. Plus it’s accompanied by the music of acoustic guitarist and hand drummer Zach Fleury. And, as if that weren’t enough, you get to sample wines from local winery Victor Alexander, do relax belly pose with light appetizers, and then perform stuff belly pose with Bon Bon delectables. Finally, enhance your karma by giving some money at the silent auction and raffle for a good cause: the end of sex trafficking. All proceeds will go toward women and children sold into slavery.
Suggested donation: $25. To reserve your space via donation, go to more info.
7. Smells Like Pirates, with Bainbridge Island author Suzanne Selfors
When: Sunday, 3 p.m.
Where: Eagle Harbor Books
Why: Have you been inducted into L.O.S.T.? Perhaps you’re on the bad side, FOUND. Or maybe you’re just a clueless parent. If so, take your kid to hear Suzanne Selfors read about smelly pirates and find out who won her Student Writing Contest!
8. Writing as a Healing Art
When: Sunday, 2-4 p.m.
Where: Treehouse Cafe 4569 Lynwood Center Rd. NE
Why: Drink a beer and get inspired to write in this casual workshop.
The workshop is free but space is limited. Preregistration is required. Contact Georgann Turner at georgannturner@comcast.net or (916) 505-8510.
9. Welcoming Gathering for New City Manager Doug Schulze & Food Drive Launch
When: Sunday, 3 p.m.
Where: City Hall, 280 Madison Avenue
Why: Meet and greet City Council members and City employees and say hello to new City Manager Doug Schulze and his family. While you’re at it gather up a food donation and bring it along for the city’s community-wide food drive, Give Thanks, Give Food! to restock the Helpline House food bank shelves.
