Bainbridge Islander Joe Haley had a shock when he got into his rental car in front of the SeaTac Hilton Hotel on International Boulevard Saturday night. A man had slipped into the backseat. When Haley asked him what he wanted, the man reportedly replied, “You know what I want.”
After a further verbal exchange, Haley pulled out a handgun he had tucked into his sock beneath his pants. According to the police report, he pointed the gun at the man in the backseat and told him to get out of the car. The two men struggled, and Haley hit the intruder with this gun several times.
Haley then reportedly got out of the car to seek help inside the Hotel. But finding no one in the lobby, he returned to the car. A chase around the car ensued until the man jumped into the driver side of the vehicle and drove off in Haley’s rental.
SeaTac police officers responded to the Hilton Hotel at about 8:40 p.m. Within a few minutes, employees at the Wally Park next to the Hilton called to report a suspicious, bloody male in the parking lot. When police arrived they found the suspect and Haley’s car.
To make matters stranger, the carjacker turned out to be Crosman Carey, an Omni Airline pilot who was laid over in Seattle and scheduled to pilot a commercial plane to Japan the next morning. The 43-year-old from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was arrested for Vehicle Theft and DUI and booked into the King County Jail.
Haley, 66, is himself a retired pilot for Delta.

Dear Joe, I'm glad that you are OK and you were prepared. It sounds like something out of a movie plot with a great outcome! Jim
I was surprised to read that a cop said he would have been justified in shooting the intruder. I wonder if the cop meant once the intruder started fighting with him. Even then though, I would not think it would be legal to shoot someone for being inside your car and fighting with you. I've heard about cases where a person shoots an intruder in their house and they still get murder charges.
